NEW BEGINNINGS

“A refreshing and revitalizing shade, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings” – says Pantone’s website on their color of the year. This is more of an optimistic tone of change and new beginnings, not a sad or fearful one. But that’s not how I feel today. It is quite symbolic that today, as I talk about new beginnings, the new leader of the free world was sworn in. Today, is history. What happens hereon will determine the course of our future and as disappointed as I am with the inaugural speech and the tone of it, I also believe that we ought to stand more unified today than ever before. Response to hate cannot be hate, and response to fear cannot be surrender. This is not the way we want to live our lives and this is not what we want to teach our children. As disappointed as I was on election day, I still had hope that people’s demeanor will change as time passes by and as things get more serious. But to my sadness, that does not seem to be the case. I am still determined to be hopeful though, in the goodness of all the people watching, to be able to stand up to wrong and not tolerate any more division (on whatever basis) or the people encouraging it. I only wish that in 4 years if people are not happy with how things turn out, they make the right choice to ensure that history does not repeat itself. Because this is not the example we want to set for our people or the world and this is not the legacy we want to be known for or leave behind. This sort of incitement of anger, hate, racism and sexism is not something to be proud of.

I’d like to leave by stating what else I found on Pantone’s website on their color of the year – “A life-affirming shade, Greenery is also emblematic of the pursuit of personal passions and vitality” and I do really wish that we all choose to do something more fruitful with our lives by not tolerating any sort of discrimination or injustice, because at the end of the day “When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty” – Thomas Jefferson.
